Artist Statement

In my practice, I work with traces of human presence - in memory, space, objects, and images. I am interested in how lived experience persists after a person and continues to exist in the form of fragments, memories, material objects, and visual evidence.

Working with painting, installation, sculpture, ceramics, video, and found materials, I assemble disparate elements into new structures. Rooms, windows, doors, hiding places, and everyday objects often appear in my works. I view them as evidence of someone’s presence and points of contact with that which cannot be seen directly.

I am drawn to spaces of transition and uncertainty between presence and absence, closeness and distance, memory and oblivion. I am interested not so much in the possibility of reconstructing a lost history as in the moment of encountering a trace. A trace becomes evidence of something that is no longer accessible to direct observation but continues to influence our perception. In my work, I strive to create situations in which the viewer can relate what they see to their own experiences, memories, and the sense of the presence of something that cannot be fully preserved.
